RED ONE

The team at RED have done just that with the launch of their RED ONE camera. Now is one of the most exciting times in Digital Film making. The RED ONE has quickly gathered an amazing amount of momentum and brought with it new challenges to existing workflows.

Because the RED ONE camera generates REDCODE RAW files (.R3D) which are very large in size the challenge is to have both a system that can handle the storage and processing requirements of RED and a workflow that will let you work in an efficient and productive manner.

A typical RED workflow might look something like this:

Collaborative Storage

A collaborative storage system allows more than one Edit Suite to access the same storage pool simultaneously. Typical examples are a server or a SAN (storage area network, where systems connect to the storage over Fibre Channel at great speed).

Key Benefits

There are significant workflow advantages with shared storage systems, such as: several people working in the same project at the same time, facility wide common fast and reliable storage, different workstations (sometimes running different operating systems) accessing the same files, integration with servers and image database systems (such as Final Cut Server).

Collaborative systems usually consists of a single pool of storage, and two or more workstations or servers having access to that storage. Faster Storage means more work stations can share the common storage pool without any performance loss. Faster storage also means that you can edit higher quality footage.
