Apple Unleashed October 2021

The M1 Pro and M1 Max processors in a newly Designed MacBook Pro

Today, Apple Unleashed their fastest MacBook ever with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. This new release offers unparalleled performance and battery life for the pro-user.

CompNow Apple Solutions Architect, Marcus Ransom and CompNow Systems Engineer, Damian Cavanagh gives you a guided tour of the latest releases from Apple.

The M1 Pro chip brings up to 2x the processing speed of the previous Intel based MacBook Pros and 2.5x the graphics performance. If you are wanting even more power, the M1 Max is your solution with up to 3.7x the processing power and up to 4x faster graphic performance for high-end video editing and code compiling.

We also got the HDMI and SDXC card slots back on the MacBook Pro to remove the need for extra adapters when connecting to a monitor or TV. The new M1 Pro also supports two external displays while the M1 Max supports up to four.

Battery life has also been improved with the ultra-efficient M1 chips, you can expect to get up to 17 hours of video playback and with Magsafe 3 when you plug in your MacBook it will fast charge to 50% in 30 minutes. This is also supported by still being able to charge via thunderbolt like the previous generation.

The new MacBook Pros also have an updated 1080p camera with 2x better low light performance. This new camera now fits within a notch at the top of the display similar to the latest iPhones. Speaking of displays, this upgrade is a Liquid Retina XDR 120hz ProMotion screen, the same as what the most recent iPad Pros have. It also supports up to 1600 nit peak brightness for use outside and when working on the go.

These new MacBook Pros come with the latest MacOS, Monterey

Also announced was the latest Airpods 3rd Generation with spatial audio and water-resistance as well as updated Apple Music plans and some new colours for HomePod mini. This was complimented with updated Siri integration and functions.

  • Powerful up to 10-core CPU with eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, along with an up to 16-core GPU
  • Delivering up to 70 per cent faster CPU performance than M1, and up to 2x faster GPU performance
  • Up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth — nearly 3x the bandwidth of M1 — and supports up to 32GB of fast unified memory
  • Designed to dramatically speed up pro video workflows, M1 Pro adds a ProRes accelerator in the media engine, delivering unbelievably fast and power-efficient video processing
  • Compared to a powerful discrete GPU for PC notebooks, M1 Pro delivers more performance while using up to 70 per cent less power

M1 Max builds on M1 Pro, taking its amazing capabilities even further, including:

  • The same powerful 10-core CPU as M1 Pro, and doubles the GPU with up to a massive 32 cores for up to 4x faster GPU performance than M1
  • Up to 400GB/s of memory bandwidth — 2x that of M1 Pro and nearly 6x that of M1 — and up to 64GB of fast unified memory
  • An enhanced media engine that features two ProRes accelerators for even higher multi-stream performance
  • As a result, pros can edit up to 30 streams of 4K ProRes video or up to seven streams of 8K ProRes video in Final Cut Pro — more streams than on a 28-core Mac Pro with Afterburner
  • With its unparalleled performance, M1 Max is the most powerful chip ever built for a pro notebook

Game changing MacBook Pros

Apple today unveiled the completely re-imagined MacBook Pro powered by the all-new M1 Pro and M1 Max, available in 14″ and 16” models.

The new MacBook Pro pushes the limits of what a notebook can do, delivering incredible performance and all-new capabilities, featuring:

  • A stunning Liquid Retina XDR display, with extreme dynamic range to bring content to life with unbelievable detail in shadows, brilliant specular highlights, deeper blacks and more vivid colours than ever before
  • ProMotion technology, featuring an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, along with automatically varied refresh rate to match the motion of a user’s onscreen content to help preserve battery life, and makes tasks more fluid and even more responsive
  • A wide range of ports for advanced connectivity, including three Thunderbolt 4 ports to connect high-speed peripherals, an SDXC card slot for fast access to media, an HDMI port for conveniently connecting to displays and TVs, and an improved headphone jack that supports high-impedance headphones
  • With M1 Pro, users can now connect up to two Pro Display XDRs
  • With M1 Max, users can connect up to three Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV
  • MagSafe returns to MacBook Pro, featuring an updated design and supporting more power into the system than ever before. MagSafe 3 makes connecting a charge cable quick and easy while protecting MacBook Pro, and introduces fast charge to the Mac for the first time, charging up to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes
  • Industry-leading power efficiency and extraordinary battery life, with the 14” model delivering up to 17 hours of video playback; the 16” model deliver a remarkable 21 hours of video playback.
  • And unlike other pro notebooks that lose performance when they are not plugged in, MacBook Pro delivers the same level of performance whether it is plugged in or using the battery
  • 1080p FaceTime HD camera — the best ever in a Mac notebook — doubling resolution and low-light performance.  The camera taps into the powerful image signal processor (ISP) and Neural engine for computational video that enhances video quality — so users appear sharper with more natural-looking skin tones
  • A high-fidelity six-speaker sound system features two tweeters for a clearer sound stage. The sound system also supports spatial audio, which creates a sophisticated, three-dimensional listening experience
  • Better for the environment, including an enclosure made with 100 per cent recycled aluminium, 100 per cent recycled tin in the solder of its main logic board, and, for the first time in a Mac notebook, the use of 100 per cent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets

The new MacBook Pros are available to order today, and will be available starting 26 October.  You can find out more about the new MacBook Pros here.
