Bulla Dairy Foods

Standardising devices, simplifying lifecycle, and improving site visibility.

Bulla Dairy Foods is one of Australia’s most recognised privately owned dairy manufacturers, producing ice cream, cream and cheese across multiple sites in Victoria. With a workforce of over 1,100 employees and a growing operational footprint, Bulla continues to invest in technology that supports safety, quality and performance across its manufacturing and corporate environments.

As Bulla expanded its facilities, including the development of its new Hearn Street operation, the need for consistent device experiences, simplified lifecycle management and enhanced site visibility became critical. Delivering reliable technology to employees while maintaining high standards of safety and compliance required a more structured and scalable approach.

Bulla partnered with Compnow to deliver a standardised fleet of HP laptops through a Compnow Device as a Service (DaaS) Agreement, alongside a modern Verkada security platform.

This approach enabled Bulla to simplify device lifecycle management, reduce internal IT workload and provide a consistent user experience, while also introducing real-time visibility across manufacturing environments.
The solution combined HP devices deployed via DaaS with a cloud-based Verkada camera system, creating a scalable foundation for both productivity and operational monitoring.

The Challenge.

As Bulla’s technology environment expanded, managing devices across a large, distributed workforce became increasingly complex. With a relatively small internal IT team, provisioning, maintaining and refreshing a fleet of more than 400 devices placed significant pressure on resources. As Head of ICT at Bulla Dairy Foods, Sean Davies explains, “There was a lot of workload on what I’ve got here as a small team to go and assess and deploy what happens to be about a 400-odd fleet across the environment.”

In parallel, inconsistencies across the device fleet created challenges for support, onboarding and user experience. Standardisation became a clear priority to ensure employees could operate efficiently from
day one.

At the same time, Bulla faced limitations with its existing security infrastructure. Multiple CCTV systems across sites introduced complexity and reduced visibility, ultimately becoming unsupportable. As Sean notes, “One of the challenges we had was a complexity of multiple CCTV solutions, which became unsupportable.”

The Solution.

To address these challenges, Bulla implemented a combined strategy focused on device standardisation, lifecycle simplification and enhanced visibility.

At the core was a Compnow Device as a Service (DaaS) Agreement, enabling a shift from reactive device management to a structured, lifecycle-driven approach. Through this model, Compnow assumed responsibility for building, deploying and managing the device fleet.

HP laptops were selected following a structured evaluation process, with Sean noting, “With Compnow’s help, we went through and trialed the devices. HP delivered what we needed here at Bulla.”
This standardisation created a consistent onboarding experience for employees while simplifying ongoing support.

Alongside the device rollout, Bulla deployed Verkada’s cloud-based camera platform across its sites, consolidating multiple legacy systems into a single, easy-to-manage solution. Site Lead – Hearn Street Operation, Aetesam Khawaja, describes the platform’s accessibility, saying, “The platform is amazing, very simple to use. You can use it on your mobile phone, you can use it on your laptops.”

The platform also introduced new levels of operational visibility. As Aetesam explains, “They provide a beautiful access point from the top where if you’re standing at the floor level, you can’t see those issues.”

Together, the DaaS model and Verkada platform established a unified, scalable foundation to support both operational efficiency and
continuous improvement.

The Benefits.

The introduction of the Compnow DaaS Agreement has significantly reduced the operational burden on Bulla’s IT team, enabling a greater focus on higher-value initiatives.

Standardised HP devices have improved the employee experience, delivering reliable, high-performance technology across the organisation. “The best is the speed of it. So we find them very, very fast in terms of what we need,” says Aetesam.

At the same time, Verkada has transformed how Bulla manages safety, quality and performance. The ability to quickly access and share footage has strengthened collaboration with suppliers and accelerated issue resolution. “When we show them a video, it’s just bang on… they are all aligned and then we can go and improve it,” says Aetesam.

The platform has also enhanced compliance and audit readiness, supporting critical control point monitoring and post-incident analysis.

Importantly, both the DaaS model and Verkada platform are designed to scale. As Bulla continues to grow, devices and cameras can be added seamlessly without introducing additional complexity.

Together, these solutions have enabled Bulla to build a more efficient, visible and future-ready environment, supporting both its people and production as the business continues to evolve.
