Mobile devices are becoming the most popular medium for accessing the internet in Australia at both home and in school.

An Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) report, Like, Post, Share: Young Australians’ Experience of Social Media, released in August 2013, found that while computers are still the main portal used by children and young adults. The report found that teenagers use three or more mobile devices to access the internet and 8 to 11 year-olds use two or more devices.

The proliferation of mobile devices in Australia is having an impact on how schools implement digital learning strategies.

“Whether it’s for study, playing games or connecting to friends and family, young Australians are placing more and more importance on the online aspects of their lives,” explained ACMA Deputy Chairman Richard Bean.

Former teacher Dave Saltmarsh from Casper Suite Software maker JAMF Software said in a June guest column in EdTech Digest that new technologies are having an important impact on how teachers teach and students learn.

“With a larger presence of digital devices in the classroom today than ever before, it is crucial that teachers have access to technology solutions that can save them time and reduce stress, while ensuring a positive learning environment for students.”

Mr Saltmarsh proposes that mobile device management can help in three ways.

  • Firstly, by streamlining teaching through applications, which enables teachers to focus students’ attention on particular modules and control the apps that students can access.
  • Secondly, the teacher is able to customise the learning experience based on the individual needs of the student. This can be achieved through installing specific apps and tailoring the content for certain learning outcomes.
  • Thirdly, mobile device management can ensure fair testing, through testing apps. These apps can range from quizzes to exams depending on the desired learning outcome.
