Navigating Broadcom’s VMware Changes: What You Need to Know

What’s Changing?

  • Minimum Subscription Increase: Broadcom has significantly raised the minimum VMware subscription requirement. Previously, businesses could subscribe to VMware on a per-core basis with a minimum of 16 cores. However, under the new model, the minimum licensing threshold has increased to 72 cores per CPU socket. This means that even if your infrastructure requires fewer cores, you will still be charged for a minimum of 72, potentially leading to substantial cost increases for organisations with smaller workloads.
  • Renewal Penalties: A 20% penalty will be applied to end customers who do not renew their subscription licenses on their anniversary date.
  • Software Update Restrictions: VMware update services will no longer be accessible without an active subscription, even for those with a valid permanent license.

These changes will take effect from April 10, and many businesses will see a significant rise in costs as a result.
