Sushi Sushi

Driving customer experience with innovative, scalable IT.

Founded in Box Hill in 1998, Sushi Sushi has grown into one of Australia’s most recognised quick service restaurant brands, with over 170 locations nationally and growing international presence. Built on values of respect, innovation, collaboration and execution, Sushi Sushi is on a mission to be the first name to come to mind when Australians think of sushi. To achieve that, the business is investing in digital transformation, from point-of-sale and networking to franchise empowerment and customer experience.

With a bold vision for growth and a lean internal IT team, Sushi Sushi needed a reliable, scalable technology partner to deliver critical infrastructure across a complex, multi-site environment. Compnow worked closely with Sushi Sushi to deploy HP Engage Pro Gen2 POS terminals and Juniper Mist AI-powered networking, supporting rapid rollout, seamless support and innovative new ways to engage customers.

The Challenge.

As Sushi Sushi evolved from a single Melbourne storefront to a nationwide brand, the demands on its technology infrastructure grew significantly. Each store, whether company-owned or franchised, needed reliable, future-ready systems to deliver seamless service and uphold the brand’s premium customer experience.

The challenge wasn’t just scale, it was agility. With franchise partners ranging from single-store operators to multi-site owners, Sushi Sushi needed to balance centralised control with flexible, easy-to-support tools at store level. The IT team, operating lean by design, also required smart, scalable systems that could be deployed rapidly, maintained remotely, and support an ambitious roadmap of innovation and digital engagement.

“When you say sushi, I want you to think Sushi Sushi.” says Anthony Sok, General Manager – IT at Sushi Sushi. “My goal is to drive technology first and bridge the gap with technology and customer experience and make sure that Sushi Sushi stands out for being a business who really challenges the status quo in the quick service restaurant space.”

The Solution.

The Juniper Switching solution roll out spanned over 160 stores. With HP Engage Pro 2 to follow suit over the next few years “One of the many reasons why we chose to transition to the HP POS is they are leading the market in understanding what QSR does need in an all-in-one fashion,” Anthony explains. “We need to make sure it’s reliable, and we also need to understand that people come in different shapes and sizes and eyesight. So the height of the POS, the clear display, that’s also important.”

Supportability was baked into the hardware choice. “What you will notice is in the neck is the I/O board. When you think about trying to troubleshoot over the phone with a store member, you need to make it that easy for them. You pull down the board on the neck, is it the red cable or the blue cable, simply swap and change. That’s a huge thing.”

Alongside HP’s POS infrastructure, Sushi Sushi implemented Juniper Mist’s networking platform to streamline connectivity across its sites. “We went from touching a switch three or four times before deployment to dropping a Juniper switch into our Mist portal before it’s even deployed,” says Anthony. “We’re changing from four weeks of work to ten clicks.”

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support built into the Juniper Mist access points also opened new avenues for customer engagement. “We’re pushing the boundaries of customer interaction, being able to communicate when they hit a certain distance to your store.” This is where technology meets customer experience.

From the outset, the partnership with Compnow focused on alignment and values. “Ross and Ules came and gave me a visit. They wrapped up with a box of sweets just to introduce themselves and let me know they were there if I needed anything,” recalls Anthony. “That respect, collaboration, innovation and execution—it aligns with our values.”

“When I called Ross and said, ‘I need three tenders,’ he brought me HP, Juniper, and others. And Julian, now Compnow’s CTO, walked me through the pros and cons of each. He was device agnostic. That mattered.”

The Benefits.

With over 160 stores now live on the new technology stack, Sushi Sushi has achieved a scalable foundation for ongoing digital transformation.

“To me, that’s not just about ticking a box, but also being able to say, if we have a store in Dunsborough or, you know, Altona or even the Northern Terrirory, we need to make sure that we’ve got that national range.”

By leveraging HP Engage Pro Gen2 and Juniper Mist, Sushi Sushi now enjoys:
Reliable, intuitive POS hardware for high-volume service environments
Faster troubleshooting and simplified phone support for lean IT teams
Scalable, zero-touch deployment to hundreds of sites

Built-in wireless intelligence and BLE customer engagement opportunities
Franchise empowerment and stronger support structures

“What we’ve been able to accomplish in just over a year and a half is astounding, and it’s not due to just what I’m doing. It’s about partnering with people like Compnow to drive the art of possibility,” Anthony says.

“If you’re trying to make sure you put customer experience first, protect franchisee profitability, and empower them through digital transformation, it means picking a strategic partner who can deliver on our expectations. This is why we work with Compnow.”
